I have heard and read that in ancient times, when the king was planning a visit to your area, the men got busy leveling and smoothing the road to your village. They wanted to welcome the king and show him honor. And if the king came and saw that the road to your village was not prepared, he would just bypass your village and you would miss his visit.
We don't want to miss the coming of the Lord. It is not enough to have just said the sinner's prayer and then to go on living like you always have. You have to change your ways and live in a way that will honor and please the King.
"Make straight in the desert a highway for our God." Isaiah 40:3.
So how do we make our highway straight? What is crooked in your life?
Psalm 24:3,4 say this: "Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully."
Is your heart pure? Are your hands clean? Do you walk in integrity? Do you deal with your neighbor with honesty? Do you follow through with a promise given? Do you speak the truth or is an occasional lie okay in your book? It's not okay in God's Book. Proverbs 12: 22 says, "Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight."
Wash your hands. Walk in integrity. Deal truthfully. Be honest.
Another way to have your path straightened is to let the Lord do it. But you have to do something first. Like a lot of God's promises, this one, too, is conditional. In Proverbs 3: 5, 6 it says this: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path." The word acknowledge means to "know by experience", and direct means to "make straight and right". So if you know the Lord intimately, walk in His ways, and trust in Him, HE will straighten your path. Isn't God good?
Yes, He is.
